When a gang leader's wife starts an affair with a bookseller who regularly visits her husband's restaurant, things complicate when she, her lover, a thief and a cook come together.

Peter Greenaway’s absolute masterpiece is an assault on the senses. It is a film of excess, gluttony and fetishism. The story is set in the high-class French restaurant Le Hollandais. Every evening, the main table is occupied by the crude and sadistic gangster Albert Spica (Michael Gambon). Having effectively taken over the restaurant, he dines there with his long-suffering wife, Georgina (Helen Mirren), and a retinue of thugs. Inspired by Jacobean revenge plays and the paintings of the Dutch Masters, the film is a triumph of visual design. Jean Paul Gaultier’s costumes change colour as the characters move between spaces, matching each room’s distinctive palette. The result is a gorgeous and vivid production, set against the vulgarity and grotesquerie of Greenaway’s narrative.

Greenaway creates a shocking, confrontational film that is intended to disturb but has grown to be considered a masterwork of British cinema. This romantic crime drama may not be to everyone's taste, but it is undeniable that The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover is an audacious and powerful film experience.
